Hypnotic Language Pattern Cheat Sheet
Creative Commons License photo credit: Day 57 - On the Nature of Language

Watch over my shoulder as I create a hypnotic language pattern using key conversational hypnosis fundamentals, in this post I’ll create a language pattern and you will see exactly the formula I use to generate it. This is going to be like a cheat sheet that you can use to create your own hypnotic language patterns that is far more organized and structured than my other post How to Create Your Own Hypnotic Language Patterns. Persuasive Themes

So you are talking with someone you would like to influence about the weather, or a movie, or things you are both interested in, or whatever and you find something that you can use to start a language pattern. You want to start talking about something interesting, something that is rich with meaning and or requires imagination.

Examples of good conversational themes:

• Progress
• Improvement
• Communication
• Transformation Sales
• Inspiration
• Spirituality
• Motivation
• Attraction
• Adventure
• Happiness
• Vacations
• Exotic Places
• Doing what you love
• Relaxation Dreams
• Poetry
• Arts (dancing, singing, acting etc)
• Love
• Destiny
• The Mind
• Desire
• Passion

I live in Los Angeles and there are a lot of actors here, so I’ll use that one. So lets say she’s an actress and she’s talking about how much she loves acting. So I am going to use acting as the focus of my pattern.

Transitional Phrases

Once you have your theme picked out the next thing you do is transition smoothly from the current topic to your language pattern topic, by using a transition phrase, so it sounds more natural and conversational.

Here are some examples of transitions:

• It’s just like
• This reminds me of
• This makes me think of
• Here is something else
• It’s interesting you mention that because…
• It sounds a lot like…
• Another fascinating story is…
• Now this goes right along with what you were saying…
• Since we’re on that subject
• We can also look it this way.

So perhaps in the acting example where I can tell she is really passionate about the art of acting I might start by saying.

I can tell you really love acting. It reminds me of…

Quotes are Your best Friend in Persuasion

I love quotes because you can get away with saying pretty much anything by saying someone else said it. I use quotes so I can separate myself from what is being said, as well as you some other persuasion strategies I’ll mention in a moments.

Here are some examples of ways to structure quotes:

• My friend, sister, cousin niece, etc. was saying
• This (some guy girl) was saying
• A teacher of mine once said
• I was watching this show the other day and the person they were interviewing said
• I was having a dream the other night and this person in my dream said
• I was reading an article, book, magazine and the writer/ author said

I also like to put quotes within quotes, like “I was watching a TV show and they were interviewing a man who was an expert in psychology and he was telling a story about a little boy who overcame blindness, and this little boy said…” it is easy to put quotes in quotes and when you do the conscious mind has trouble keeping up and this confusing creates a light trance state.

Now when I add quotes my pattern becomes:

I can tell you really love acting. It reminds me of article I was reading the other day, and the author was talking about acting and actors and the difference been actors and great actors. He said actors memorize their lines find a neat way to say them and then just parrot what they memorized when the camera starts to roll, but great actors he said experience acting in a totally different way.

Great actors he said memorize the lines, but they have no idea how they will deliver the line when the camera starts to roll because they are totally in the moment. You know what it’s like when you…

I cheated a little here and added another strategy that I didn’t intend to initially. I compared two things that are similar but different. Whenever you compare two things that are similar but different it forces the person to listen very closely to what you are about to say, this narrowing of focus also adds to the trance state.

Pronoun Sifts

Part of the reason for using quotes is that now you can use the I YOU shift. If you don’t remember what the I YOU shift is it is talking about something your or someone else has experienced and using your language to speak about it in the second person. So instead of saying I feel relaxed when I go on vacations say I love going on vacations, it’s like you can just leave your world behind and you can step into a place of relaxation and peace.

This is so irresistibly persuasive because the unconscious mind does not know which you you are referring to and treats it like a suggestion.

Here are some examples of I You Shifting also called Pronoun Shifting:

• What’s it like when you
• What happens when you
• You know what it’s like when you
• Just like when you
• And you could
• As if you could
• They were saying that when you
• And they told me; you…
• So I thought to myself you
• I could hear the voice inside say; you…
• And the lyrics said; you…
• And it was like just as if you

Hypnotic Lead-Ins

Hypnotic lead in are any type of phrase that requires a person to go inside and access their imagination. Any time you say something require use of the imagination the person must go into a trance.

A hypnotic lead-ins here are some examples:

• Imagine yourself
• Pretend that you
• Think about how you
• Notice yourself
• Observe yourself
• Let yourself
• Allow yourself
• Anticipate what it would be like
• See yourself
• Allow yourself to
• Give yourself permission to
• Imagine what it is like to
• Realize what it is like to
• Realize what it is like to
• Utilize your ability
• Embrace your ability
• Access your ability
• Expect to choose to
• Decide to
• Commit to
• Begin to
• Beginning to
• Start to

Here is my example with pronoun shifts and hypnotic lead-ins:

I can tell you really love acting. It reminds me of article I was reading the other day, and the author was talking about acting and actors and the difference been actors and great actors. He said actors memorize their lines find a neat way to say them and then just parrot what they memorized when the camera starts to roll, but great actors he said experience acting in a totally different way.

Great actors he said memorize the lines, but they have no idea how they will deliver the line when the camera starts to roll because they are totally in the moment. You know what it’s like when you are on stage and…

Descriptive Language

Now the next step is one of my favorites because this is where persuasion becomes an art, using beautiful and descriptive language that creates a state. You do this by describing a state very thoroughly. If you say it with tonality that matches the state the person will go into that state.

To describe a state ask your self questions about the state you want to create ask

• What triggers it?
• How does it happen?
• Where does it happen spatially or in the body?
• How quickly does it happen?
• What does it lead to next?

So when I add descriptive language to my pattern:

I can tell you really love acting. It reminds me of article I was reading the other day, and the author was talking about acting and actors and the difference been actors and great actors. He said actors memorize their lines find a neat way to say them and then just parrot what they memorized when the camera starts to roll, but great actors he said experience acting in a totally different way.

Great actors he said memorize the lines, but they have no idea how they will deliver the line when the camera starts to roll because they are totally in the moment.

You know what it’s like when you are on stage and you are in that beautiful magical moment right before you get on to perform you feel that adrenaline rush flowing all through your body . And then (snaps fingers) instantly your mind just goes to a different place, a place where you aren’t worried about what people think, you aren’t thinking about what happened yesterday, you aren’t worried about tomorrow, you just step into that magical place inside your mind…

Embedded Commands

Next come the embedded commands. If you want a quick lesson on embedded commands I just posted a video tutorial about how to use embedded commands. Remember that embedded commands work best in patterns, so try to use at least three.

Here are some examples of embedded commands.

• Feel Better
• Find solutions
• Make progress
• Achieve your goals
• Do your best
• Become calmer
• Change
• Enjoy life
• Have fun
• Be at peace
• Feel successful
• Feel good
• Feel happy
• Appreciate yourself
• Feel stronger
• Buy now
• Listen to me
• Believe me
• Trust me
• Like me
• Open to me
• Do it
• Go for it

Here is my hypnotic language pattern example now with embedded commands.

And then (snaps fingers) instantly your mind just goes to a different place, a place where you aren’t worried about what people think, you aren’t thinking about what happened yesterday, you aren’t worried about tomorrow, you just step into that magical place inside your mind where you just become one with the moment to the point where you begin to feel free, just completely free.

And the more you feel free the more you feel passion the more you feel passion the more you feel that feeling of being in the moment…

Anchor the State to You Using Binder Commands

When you use your language to anchor the state you created to yourself, you will be associated with all those good feeling emotions.

Here are some examples of binder commands:

• …Now…
• …Right Now…
• …Here…
• …Now, here…
• …To me…
• …With me…
• …And me…
• …For me…
• …before me…(be for me)
• …Me and You…
• …Like me…

So now my hypnotic language pattern is complete using persuasive themes, transitions, quotes, pronoun shifts, hypnotic lead-ins, embedded commands, descriptive language, and binder commands:

And the more you feel free the more you feel passion the more you feel passion the more you feel that feeling of being in the moment…Now with me I never had been interested in acting but I can see why people like you love it so much.

I really, really appreciate the time and energy that you put in these articles. This one was a masterpiece, like the other ones. There is so much information that personally I feel overwhelmed …and after I’ve read it from my RSS reader, I’ve came to a conclusion …that I have to read this article at a more deeper level, and try to create some examples with the ideas that I’ve received from these words.

Thanks again, and keep us the good work.

Thanks M!hai,

Your words of appreciation are what keep me going, that and it is a labor of love- I do love persuasion. But more is yet to come, hold onto your hat buddy you aint seen nothing yet!

Yup just play with the post print it out and makew up your own patterns and post em here if you want my opinion on any of em ;-)

lol, i dont want to toot my own horn, but I was reading this post over and man this is a really good post :-)

Ok …as I’ve said in the first comment, I had to read this post more focused, taking notes, and asking questions. So …I’ve took a bath, and right now I’m alone in a room, with just a small light and my brand new and shiny laptop reading and focusing all my attention on this post …so let’s begin with some questions …

”So you are talking about the weather, or a movie, or things you are

both interested in, or whatever and you find something that you can use to

start a pattern.”

There is the rapport part ( topics that you are both interested, and that

can keep a conversation going ). As I’ve read before patterns sound wired

without good rapport.

”You want to start talking about something interesting, something that

is rich with meaning and or requires imagination.”

At this part do you have a plan in mind, or something that you have to to

step by step to get to the desired state ?

”I live in Los Angeles and there are a lot of actors here, so I’ll use

that one. So lets say she’s an actress and she’s talking about how much

she loves acting. So I am going to use acting as the focus of my

pattern.

Why acting ? What is your purpose with this pattern ? What are you trying

to achieve ? As I see it speaking about acting you demonstrate her that

you understand her world, and in conclusion you increase rapport.

Later edit : I saw that in the end you anchored the emotion that acting offers to that woman, but what is the effect of this ? Or how you’ll use the anchor ?

“I was watching a TV show and they were interviewing a man who was an

expert in psychology and he was telling a story about a little boy who

overcame blindness, and this little boy said…”

I love this example …you can even fool a skilled person by losing them

on the road with this kind of story. BTW - You’re good ! :)

As I’ve said in the previous comment, there is a lot to learn from this post, and someway is overwhelming, …even you said that you used a lot of techniques here ( persuasive themes, transitions, quotes, pronoun shifts, hypnotic lead-ins, embedded commands, descriptive language, and binder commands ). I also know them, their meaning, but I don’t have the skill (yet) to put them all together, and that’s why I would like to ask you how I should start to develop my skill ? Sit down and write ? This was one of the advices you gave to the readers in a previous post.

”So you are talking about the weather, or a movie, or things you are

There is the rapport part ( topics that you are both interested, and that
can keep a conversation going ). As I’ve read before patterns sound wired
without good rapport.

BILL:Yes that is accurate, but this part presupposes you already have rapport. This is not an attempt to get rapport, this is fishing for a topic that is a good one to run a pattern on, I gave a list above showing examples of good topics for patterns.

”You want to start talking about something interesting, something that
is rich with meaning and or requires imagination.”
At this part do you have a plan in mind, or something that you have to to
step by step to get to the desired state ?

BILL:that is a good question, what state do you want to get a person to be in around you? Comfort, trust, connection, trance, arousal, ecstasy, passion, excitement. In the example above I just used what she was giving me. Please note that the above example was exactly that AN EXAMPLE, I just made it up as I wrote the article.

The better you are at calibration the better you will be able to gauge what state will best get you your desired outcome. I know that sounds vague but some parts of the persuasion process you will not understand till you TRY THEM M!HAI, you will notice the more you try them and the better you get at the patterns the more you will instinctively know which states to create in others.

Or you could ask yourself what states do I go into when I X, where X equals the thing you are influencing someone to do. When you become attracted to someone or fall in love with someone, or become interested in something how does it start, what state are you in first, (curiosity, fascination, wonder etc) those are all resourceful states you could use and then from there what states does it lead to.

You ask excellent questions, but at times I wonder if they are as helpful as the answers you will discover on your own as you experiment on your own and report back.

I also wonder exactly how much more powerful in your persuasion skills you will become when you look at it more like an art and less like a mathematical equation. I mean what the difference between art class and math class, math class you are bound by certain rules and limits of a predetermined system and there is only one correct answer to every problem.

But art class there is many solutions to every situation, and many different beautiful forms of expressions. Expression that allows you to go inside and imagine something amazing that you want to create and it allows you to feel so empowered and liberated because you know that you can only get it right .

I remember when I was in high school there was a kid named Jared, and Jared was the most brilliant artist in the class, one day I asked him how he was able to create such beautiful paintings, and he said its like you begin to really FOCUS ON THE IMAGE in your mind of this beautiful art. And that focus naturally leads to going into a state of pure expression, where it doesn’t matter how it turns out, but all that matters is the fun and the journey of creating the art.

BILL:Why did I choose acting? I am giving her a cookie of positive emotions to eat. This state here is like a trance state, trance states feel good. Trance is the beautiful relaxing peaceful moment of oneness with your environment.

Again bro this was just an example, I already explained the criteria for the topics you choose to make a pattern on. If she said she loved, it doesn’t matter what the exact topic is. Do me a favor read it again and forget about the words and the content, forget about acting for get about the state I created, and look at the STRUCTURE OF WHAT I DID. I laid the structure out very clearly; it would serve you best to not analyze my exact wording and look at HOW I said it rather than what I said..

the rapport is just a natural bi-product of the conversation that she is interested in, but again I already have rapport by this time.

Later edit : I saw that in the end you anchored the emotion that acting offers to that woman, but what is the effect of this ? Or how you’ll use the anchor ?

BILL:It anchors those positive emotions to me :-) Guess where that might be useful, and depending on my skill level and her suggestibility level, she will probably think of me every time she acts. I created the state I might as well take credit for it.

“I was watching a TV show and they were interviewing a man who was an
expert in psychology and he was telling a story about a little boy who
overcame blindness, and this little boy said…”

I love this example …you can even fool a skilled person by losing them
on the road with this kind of story. BTW - You’re good !

BILL:Thanks I have had good teachers, and I read a sh*t load of books, and I love this stuff!

BILL:I was working on a post about how to be more persuasive in social circles like bars and nightclubs, but tell ya what, since you have left more helpful comments than anyone of my readers I will work on making my next post about persuasion practice :-)

Hi Bill, thanks for this AWESOME blog. Your language that you use is quite inspiring.

I was chatting earlier today to a friend, who seems to like putting herself down alot. I always try and persuade her change her view of herself. Here is my reply to her asking why I compliment her so much.

“It was just me helping you see yourself the way you truely are. A friend of mine once told me that the way we portray ourselves to others is how we see and feel about ourselves, if we don’t love who we are, why should others? I know you know this, and every time you hear this you will begin to understand it on an even deeper level, with absolute and concise clarity of how special you really are, is that not true?”

Could you give your opinion on my language and where i could improve?

Aloha Bill,

Grrrreat post! I wanted to bookmark this on Friend Feed, but I’m unable to follow your Tweets :( bummer - cuz we had so much fun last month debating about women and men and persuasion.

Will you be at Dave’s event next weekend?

Perhaps we’ll be able to connect in person and chat more - then u can persuade me even more :)
